We're the Oldest Labor Day Festival in the South!

Canton’s Labor Day Festival began in 1906 as a celebration of the Western North Carolina worker — honoring the grit, determination, and craftsmanship that built the Champion Fibre Company paper mill and shaped the identity of the town itself. Through the Great Depression, two World Wars, economic shifts, and changing industries, both the mill and the festival endured, becoming lasting symbols of resilience and pride in Haywood County.

For more than a century, the paper mill stood at the heart of Canton’s economy and identity. Generations of workers devoted their lives to the mill, producing paper products used around the world and helping sustain families across Western North Carolina. Although the mill closed in 2023, its legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of the community and the history of the region.

Today, the Canton Labor Day Festival continues to honor that legacy and the hardworking people who built this town. What began as a workers’ celebration more than a century ago has grown into one of the longest-running Labor Day festivals in the South — a gathering rooted in resilience, community pride, and the enduring spirit of Western North Carolina.

Join us in downtown Canton this Labor Day weekend for live music, local food, handmade crafts, family activities, and a celebration of the people and traditions that continue to shape our mountain community. While Canton’s story is evolving, its spirit of hard work, perseverance, and pride remains stronger than ever.

Celebrate Canton’s past, present, and future with us.
